Bashed-in wall
During Ramadan, the traffic gets quite hectic towards late afternoon as everybody rushes home for the Iftar meal which signifies the end of the day's fasting. When we popped out a couple of hours ago, a taxi driver starting honking optimistically for our custom (which we didn't want). Whilst he was doing so, another taxi driver pulled up alongside him trying to steal our custom (which again we didn't want) right out from under his nose.
Well I tell you, did tempers flare! #1 was shouting and wailing and pointing accusatory fingers whilst #2 gave it right back. Just as I whipped the camera out, #2 actually got out his taxi and started walking menacingly towards #1 with the obvious intent of beating the living shit out of him. #1 was a bit smaller than #2 and so decided to peg it down the street in his rickety old shell of a vehicle, shouting insults as he did so. They were actually about to get into a fight about which taxi we didn't want to get in to!
I didn't manage to get it on camera I'm afraid and so my blipbank comes to the rescue with 'bashed-in wall'. My blipbank is now looking like this:
Arabic post
dusty Pepsi bottles
brown flower
flower on a bit of string
bike wheel
light bulb
bashed-in wall
kittens
As I write this, the sun has not long set everyone is Iftar is well underway. At this time, a lovely sense of calm takes over Maadi for a while as all residents disappear into their homes. Then, it's business as usual as the evening stuff-your-face parties kick-in and everybody goes shopping and generally gets on with whatever they do with their lives.
I find it all fascinating.
