Nothin' like a bit o' Pressure

My Dad started gathering useful bits of wood well before I was born. I gradually inherited his collection and the habit along with it.
We're off to live in another country very soon (Vancouver, Canada, and I can't wait to start my new job) but my extensive native wood collection has hit a solid wall of logistics. Either I actually start making something with it, or I throw it all out. I can't take my power tools with me either. Canada has a different voltage to New Zealand, so there's another solid wall of logistics to butt my head against.

Bah.

This here's my first effort almost finished. We have a lovely, comfortable, latex mattress that's definitely going with us and now we'll have a bed base to put it on! The headboard looks a bit square and boring at the moment but I can change that. My ability to identify where every bit of wood came from is a source of endless amusement for The Lovely Ange.

Headboard:the side of a wardrobe from our old earthquake-damaged house

Headboard and foot frame: wall studs from our previous old house in Lincoln. It was a century-old villa made entirely from native Rimu (sacrilege, but that's how they did it, back then) and as most of the wall studs were eaten up by borer worms (munch-munch, thanks-for-lunch) I had to replace all of them. But I was able to save some pieces that had escaped the ravening little bastards just by being too hard. Borer doesn't like heart-wood. So not only are they cowardly dark-dwellers, they're wimps too.

Side rails: shelving from the pantry at Lincoln. The house was owned by the Hari-Krishna before us, and even now the wood has a subtle memory of incense when I cut it.

Slat rail: rough-sawn planks my Dad collected in nineteen-oh-footsack. God knows where they came from, but at least I've used a couple of them.

Now it's all come together and getting shipped off to Canada. Wasn't that interesting and instructive?

Not really.

There's also a bedside table made from old Kauri door-frames, that's still kitset on the workbench. I stopped working on it because I came over all grandiose and decided to make a bed, instead. Maybe I'll finish the table next.
