Chameleon

It looks like terror, but it wasn't, not at all. This guy was just taking a verrry slow stroll around his tank in the pet store. The languorous movement reminded me of yesterday's caterpillar: the careful picking up of one part at a time, stretching, feeling, then grasping and moving on. His hands are fascinating--five fingers, but grouped two together and then the remaining three together. And those hooded eyes! they move independently of each other, and seemingly constantly, rolling and searching, rolling and searching.

We were out to buy cat litter, but I felt that I'd been taken on a fabulous field trip to a very exotic place. There were snakes, too, and nervous little hamsters, and a lovely orange canary with a fuzzy hairdo.
