A BABY SQUIRREL --
--- much to my surprise! They must have been a late summer birth. I’ve noticed the adult female was probably nursing, but I didn’t see any other evidence of babies – there are two, in fact. This morning, for the first time, they were foraging for spilled bird seed under the bird feeders. They’re very small – the body might be almost six inches long, and of course their tails have already developed into gorgeous fur blankets so they'll be warm this winter. I’m so glad I noticed them before they were full grown – which will probably be soon. They really are cute!!
I thought my blip was set for today when I saw a downy woodpecker at the suet feeder – also a 'first' to spot anyone enjoying the suet. I’ve posted the downy on Flickr, along with another shot of the baby squirrel.
