Lyon Through Midnight

Singer songwriter, Yvonne Lyon, must have one of the most mellifluous voices this side of the Greenock Sugar Sheds.

Last night, Yvonne and her husband and partner in music, David, were on Tom Morton's BBC Radio Scotland show, Morton Through Midnight.

Tom described Absent Voices lead artist, Alec Galloway, as the programme's artist-in-residence - a reference to the fact that Alec (a musician as well as an artist) has created artwork live as the programme has aired.

Some of the best creative endeavours happen round midnight...

Yvonne and David were interviewed by Tom about their new album, These Small Rebellions, and during the course of their chat, Yvonne gave a very succinct description of the Absent Voices project in which eight artists are collaborating to tell the story of Greenock's lost sugar industry.

Yvonne is currently studying for an MA in Songwriting at the University of the West of Scotland, although she has been doing the job for the last 10 years.

The experience is clearly adding a layer to her songwriting which is taking her work to a new level.

For Absent Voices, Yvonne will be holding songwriting workshops within Inverclyde, using the old songs which used to be sung routinely by workers in the Sugar Sheds as they went about their business.

She'll also be working with Absent Voices artist, Alastair Cook, on a Filmpoem strand.
