Long-tailed Duck or Oldsquaw
I've seen thirty-one species of duck in Britain but I have to say that this one must be my favourite. Not just because they are dead pretty but they have not succumbed to appearing in depressing places such as gravel pits in the South East of England. Always on the sea off a wild coast, nearly always in the surf and always looking like they are loving the conditions.
It makes photographing them difficult and I didn't quite get the shot I wanted of an adult male. These two were part of a group of fourteen playing in the surf off Stinky Bay as I was on the way to the Doctor's Surgery.
I have always liked the American name for this species, Oldsquaw - unusually as I am not a fan of their names generally. I tried to look up the etymology of the name and discovered that the word squaw is mired in all sorts of controversy and as a consequence the Americans have renamed the Oldsquaw as Long-tailed Duck, following us English and indeed most of Europe. Just when you think the Americans have done something good they go and spoil it!
