John Clare's Cottage
Had a wonderful outing today, to somewhere I've wanted to visit for a few years - John Clare's cottage in the village of Helpston, north of Peterborough. It has been brilliantly restored and developed as a museum/cafe/literary venue by the John Clare Trust. To my mind Clare, along with Gerard Manley Hopkins and Edward Thomas, is one of the greatest English poets to have written about nature and the countryside. My favourite line of his is "I found the poems in the fields and only wrote them down". This brilliant place is open almost every day of the year - do visit!
