Moo and milk

The cow is of the bovine ilk;
One end is moo, the other, milk.

(Ogden Nash)

One of the suggestions for a name for this cow is The TOON COOncillor (possibly seen in large by her bottom) An alternative of Auld Reekie probably refers to the puff of dry ice which apparently emits from the bottom at certain times.

The Cowgate refers to the fact that it was the old traditional route for cows to be driven to the Grassmarket or to the common pastures on the Burgh Muir. In 1905 a report was printed expressing concern at the large number of cows which were still being kept in sheds behind the nearby densely populated tenements so that fresh milk could be readily available to the people of Edinburgh. There were 115 city cowsheds licensed to hold 3147 cows and most of them would have very little chance of ever seeing good grass.
