Skara Brae

A very busy day. We started off going to Maeshowe , a prehistoric burial chamber, then to Barnhouse showing the remains of a settlement with a large building which they think was some kind of meeting place. We then went to the Ring of Brodgar and on to the Bay of Skaill. Where we had a picnic on the beach watching Oyster Catchers, Ringed Plovers and Sanderlings feeding at the edges of the sea.

We then went to Skara Brae, the stone age village that was revealed after a storm blew the sand covering it. As a child I used to go round into the village with my brothers and go through the tunnels between the rooms, now you have to keep to the paths round about. Afterwards we went round Skaill House which belonged to the man who found Skara Brae.

Next was a walk out to Yesnaby Castle, a sea stack. There is a hole worn away by the sea at the bottom of the stack and it has been the subject of many photos. Lots of choice to blip but decided on Skara Brae.
