Yesterday my son bought his ‘dream bike’. He flew to Dunedin to pick it up and was so excited to be riding it home to Christchurch. Less than 2 hours later an inattentive driver pulled a u-turn in front of him.

A Christchurch man died in a crash just hours after collecting his "dream" motorcycle from Dunedin.

Cameron Alexander Blaze Johnson, known to friends and family as Blaze, died after suffering serious injuries in a crash near Bushey, north of Palmerston, on Sunday.

The 24-year-old had flown to Dunedin that morning to pick up a new motorcycle and was riding it home when the crash occurred.

Johnson's aunt, Leigh Bromell, told The Press the motorcycle, a Kawasaki Ninja, was his "dream bike".

"He loved motorbikes; he's been riding them since he was eight. He had five of them but this was his first sports bike," she said.

"He'd flown down to Dunedin on Sunday morning to get it and was so excited about driving it home."

It is believed Johnson was travelling back to Christchurch when the driver of a Toyota Corona undertook a U-turn and collided with him.

He was flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter, but later died as a result of his injuries.

The 52-year-old driver of the Toyota Corona was taken to Dunedin Hospital with minor injuries.

A police spokesman said inquiries were continuing into the cause of the crash, but charges were likely.

The attending policeman took us out to the site of the accident and explained the sequence of events as they understand them so far. It’s a busy state highway and I didn’t have any hi-vis gear so he lent me his.
