So today was the day, the day it finally properly rained in Granada. Knew we were doing too well with the weather. Its my own fault really, I had to challenge fate by claiming that this was the longest I'd ever gone without seeing a drop of rain. But, being such dedicated students, a little bit of rain wasn't going to stop us going to our lectures. Or trying to anyway. Our first lecture was at midday, when we made it all the way up the hill only to find it had been cancelled due to strike action. Typical. So back down the hill it was as there was no point hanging around until our next lecture at 5:30. Now we had a bit of a dilemma; did we take the chance that our next lecture was also cancelled or risk another potentially unnecessary walk up the hill? In the end the guilt of having attended so little caught up with us, particularly as this was the one class we'd never been to. We got to the auditorio and there seemed to be people waiting for the lecturer so it looked like the class was going ahead. We waited for about 15 mins with ever hopeful thoughts that maybe she wouldn't turn up. Unfortunately, she did. Supposedly this was supposed to be our class on the history of Spanish literature, so when she started to talk about linguistic concepts my suspicions were raised. Couldn't be sure whether my Spanish or ability at finding the right lecture theatre was at fault. As the lecture progressed however, it became clearer that we were not supposed to be there, so Helen and I started planning our escape route. Spanish lectures are two hours long, which is bad enough when you're supposed to be there let alone when you don't have to be. After discussing potential tactics (fake illness? crawl under the desks? wait for the break to leave?), we went for the simplest. In a brave move we got up, eyes averted from all potential contact, walked down the aisle, past the lecturer and made it safely out the door unchallenged. Possibly one of the most nerve-racking experiences of my exchange so far.
