Dumbarton Castle
Armed with our new Historic Scotland passes we set out for our second of Scotland's four strategic castles. There are 500 steps all over the rock on which the castle stands - not for the faint hearted!
Here we are approaching the Governor's house. From the top of the rock there is a 365 deg. view from the river Leven, Dumbarton and Ben Lomond, to the Erskine Bridge, down to the tail of the bank and over the Clyde to Langbank.
The canon, Mons Meg was here before being relocated to Edinburgh and Mary Queen of Scots left here aged six to be married to the young Dauphin in France - well worth a visit!
