Squinty Bridge

Got into Glasgow early this morning, so managed to take a few shots just as the sun was rising above the Squinty Bridge. I like the feel of this almost monochrome shot.

It has been another busy day as part of the Creative Mackintosh Festival. At lunchtime we had an excellent talk by Jill Scott and Bill Hicks on the history of the Central Hotel. Designed by Scottish architect Robert Rowand Anderson, it opened in 1883. Celebrated for its architecture, its glitz and its glamour, it has entertained most of the world’s politicians and movie stars. And in 1927 it was the venue to which the world’s first long-distance television pictures were transmitted, from London by John Logie Baird. The real stars of this talk are the staff and ordinary people who have passed through this amazing hotel.

Jill Scott and Bill Hicks are the authors of ‘Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel’ – with tales to tell, including the story of its £20 million refurbishment, and over a century of illustrations. This is a fabulous book.
