A long way from home
The Maasai are nomadic and mainly found between Kenya and North Tanzania. As the boys grew to men, they are considered korianga"warriors" and what we have found out in Zanzibar is that they are recruited from the mainland as security guards for the hotels where the tourists are because, in the words of our Tanzanian hotel manager, "they are good guardians - they protect very well". This one has come to the beach front every day and sits looking across the water. I wonder if he misses home, his family, his community. Dressed in a shuka and kikoi, ankles bejeweled with beaded bracelets, he sits with his knife and stick contemplating the deep blue.
