The tiniest of winged things

Backblip. Working on a garden gate project on Sunday afternoon, we were visited by this tiny insect, which climbed into the hole at the end of my spirit level (pictured) and sat there for a while (antennae twitching) until I eased it out with a small twig to avoid it being squashed or damaged as we used the spirit level. I think it may be an ichneumonid, with the 'spike' at its tail being its egg-laying appendage (or ovipositor) rather than a sting. If it is one If these, then there are 2400 or so species in the UK and identification would likely be extremely challenging (if not impossible from a photo). We felt privileged to have been visited by this tiny flying marvel.
