Riding to Conquer
Blip for today WAS going to be the cannon shot that is fired from the 13th C Lotrscak Tower, every day at noon (a tradition begun on New Year's Day, 1877) - we can hear it in our flat. I was all ready with my camera focused on the canon sticking out of the window, but when it went off, I jumped so much that the shot is skewiff and out of focus, so it's King Tomislav, whose beer we drank yesterday.
Tomislav (which also happens to be name of owner of flat we're in) defended Croatia from Hungary, was the first to unite all Croatian lands into one country, got papal recognition for his realm, and was crowned in 925.
This statue is the first thing you see when you come out of the train station. I took a photo of it yesterday, but wasn't great - then was looking at a book of photos lastnight, by a Croatian, Luca Mjeda, who gave me the idea of doing it like this.
