Terrific Trams
Continuing Zagreb's blue theme, here is one of her trams, coming out of the main Jelacica Square (you can just see the General on horseback to the right) - this is the intersection of seven cross-town routes. Seems a brilliant system to me, and costs about a £1 for however far you want to go, which is quite far - the journey we'll do on Friday takes about 45 minutes.
Highlights of the day:
- a Serbian Orthodox church - just beautiful - totally covered, ceiling and walls with paintings - especially liked the wedding at Cana one, and as J would say, it even smelled holy
- buying half a kilo of dried figs at the market, for a pittance
- sipping a Tomislav (first king of Croatia) dark beer while watching the activity in the market
- walking the entire "Lenuci's Horseshoe" - over 2km of interconnecting parks, including the Botanical Gardens, where we saw Vitoria Regia water lilies in a greenhouse
- the opulent Esplanade Hotel next to the train station, built to house travellers on the Orient Express, on their way from Paris to Istanbul - what memories that place must hold...
- walking an extra 2km to see the gas lamps in the old part being lit, only to have them come on automatically!!
And - of interest to some - finding that Kefir is on sale in any cold cabinet, in various forms!! So that's our immune systems sorted.
