BBQ
This evening, my roommate Kendra and I went to our friends apartment because for a BBQ. Their landlord decided to throw a little BBQ and he made more food then anyone could ever have eaten. There will be leftovers for weeks! It was very nice and relaxing time on the rooftop of their building over looking Amman.
I met a few people from Manchester, England that are taking Arabic class here in Amman until next May at a different institution. We got to talking and one of the girls mentioned that she volunteers a few hours a week at a small organization that started last year by a few Syrian refugees that fled to Amman last year in the midst of the conflict. She told me about how much they have struggled. How much they want to go home, the torture and years of being imprisoned for no reasons. How one women's husband is still in Syria and has been in jail for 2 years already. how some of the others have family members still in Syria and how much they have suffered through already.
These people started an organization in Amman to help other Syrian refugees in Amman. Apparently they do activities with kids and help other refugees on other capacities that I'm unclear of as of yet. The girls from England were saying that they go along with the rest of their Arabic class to to volunteer a bit but mostly as a language exchange. They help the Syrians speak English and the Syrians help them speak Arabic. I talked to them a bit more and of course I'm all over this for so many reasons, so I'm gonna go with them next week to do the Arabic stuff as well as understand more about what they do and how/if I might be able to help a bit. We'll see how it goes, but I'm pretty excited about the possibility of this and if nothing else just to meet some wonderfully amazing people!!
