Historical Treasure

Today we visited the Narrows Covered Bridge in Turkey Run State Park. The bridge was built in 1882 at a cost of $3,400. It’s 121 feet long, and spans Sugar Creek. It’s one of the most photographed covered bridges in Indiana. Sugar Creek was once called Rock River because of its size and rocks. The Pottawatomie Indians called it Pungosecone which translates as “the waters of many sugar trees”. I don’t remember ever seeing a covered bridge in person before, so this was a real treat. It’s a beautiful bridge and accessible from all angles. We walked through it and under it and I took pictures from every angle.

The drive to Turkey Run was like a blast from the past for me. We traveled through the same rural Indiana I first saw in 1960 when my then new husband took me to meet my in-laws. It didn’t look to me as though much had changed in 50+ years. We stopped to eat at a little café which was almost a surreal experience for me because the only hint of anything different from 1960 was the energy-saving light bulbs in the fixtures. Rob noticed that because I was too busy trying to remind myself that I wasn’t 20 years old and newly married. It was a really fun day.
