What is going on?

You may not think it from the blip, but this was a very interesting and eventful evening.

I don't think I can be criticized for suggesting that Wigton lacks quality restaurants where you can have a nice evening meal. One of the events listed in the brochure was "A Bookshop Dinner" - an intimate supper with an informal talk from one of Scotland's leading writers. So we thought this would be a good opportunity to have a nice meal and listen to a speaker. The leading writer was James Robertson, winner of the 2012 Saltire Book of the Year Award "The Lay of the Land" - in the photograph he is the gent in the suit with his arms folded.

There were about 20 people at the dinner and we were just finnishing the first course when the makeshift table at the far end of the room collapsed - dishes and wine scattered over the table and the floor. As you can see, another table was soon found and the tables reassembled and dressed. What made the incident a bit interesting for myself and friends was that earlier in the day we had gone to a talk by Peter Conradi, author of The King's Speech . His new book Hotdogs and Cocktails is again about George VI's life, this time about a visit to President FD Roosevelt in NY where, at a dinner, a table covered by a 3000 piece dinner-set had collapsed and smashed - the dinner set had been borrowed.

Our dinner wasn't such a disaster and kind of brought the company together. James' talk was very entertaining and the food and company were excellent.
