Day 4 - The search for a hat and a birthday cake
Destination Autun.
Plan to visit the Cathedral, the Roman Ampitheatre and the temple of Juno.
First stop was the Cathedral. There are lot of churches and cathedrals in France.
On Sundays they must be packed full of supermarket employees. Today is Tuesday and the Cathedral is virtually empty. Henry and Hannah were instructed in the workings of the confessional box and receiving Holy Communion. They both left the Cathedral totally confused.
We all left in three cars to get to the ampitheatre. One car got there - ours. The other two couldn't find it - mainly because they had Tomtoms and we were using a map. They decided on an alternative location, and since they had the other half of the picnic, we negotiated a deal where we would pack up and go and find them... the reality of sharing a holiday with other members of the family began to become apparent - compromises have to be made. We had a very frosty picnic and buggered off on our own to complete the plan for the day. Ed wanted to see the temple of Juno as a prority, and we weren't disappointed. Henry found a lizard so he was well chuffed. We went back into Autun to get a present and a birthday cake for Henry as he is five tomorrow. The sun was scorching and Henry had lost his hat and I hadn't brought one, so hat shops were on the list as well as toyshops.
Apparently Autun doesn't have either. This was realised after two hours of walking around in a fruitless search. We cut our losses and drove 50 miles to a hypermarche which had a supply (albeit limited) of hats and toys, and more importantly it was air-conditioned.
Still, we managed to achieve everything we set out to do.
Later on we got pissed.
