Between fen and mountains

I went out for a short walk in the next village this afternoon. I liked this old cloister just for the fact that, although the 11th and 12th century church is a historic building, it is welded into the fabric of the village with a rough old parking space behind it and village houses butting up against it. I liked rather less my welcome in the church. The church is locked up most of the time but I noticed the door was open so I wandered in. A lady confronted me and said there was an entrance fee. I said I was only going to spend a couple of minutes inside, a few moments of quiet reflection. She pointedly barred my way and said au revoir. No wonder fewer and fewer people are going to church these days! I find this lack of welcome very sad.
