Trees
Today I visited several of the buildings taking part in Doors Open Day 2013 in Edinburgh where it’s possible to see inside buildings which are not normally open to the public. I saw one that was built almost 400 years old and another over 500 years old. However I show the newest one built last year and set in a peaceful garden within metres of a very busy walkway. It was built to provide a larger and more accessible Chaplaincy Centre for the Catholic students at Edinburgh University and is run mainly by the Dominicans. One idea was to incorporate the view of the trees outside with the changes of light throughout the day and the seasons. The sedum covered roof appears to float above the ‘tree’ supports and optical illusions enhance the structure. It is a most interesting building and an asset to the local Catholic community.
