The Spinster Sisters

We decided to take a break today and go out to lunch at one of our favorite spots called the Spinster Sisters. It is in what was once a fairly nondescript two story building tucked in between the freeway and the "arts" district, an area which is slowly being gentrified. The artists come first and make the area so much more appealing that pretty soon they can't afford the rent and have to move on. Or at least that is what happened in the Bay Area.

The restaurant has a big three-sided bar with a redwood slab top and not enough some tables. We prefer the bar (but not the seat on the corner which has what was once the base of a branch sticking out, and upon which I once hit my funny bone and was rendered speechless for awhile.) The walls are concrete with a changing display of art, and the ceiling has visible ductwork and some interesting pendant lights. There is a semi-open kitchen where the chef (with pink hair ) turns out an interesting and changing menu. OilMan had a meatloaf sandwich with fries and I had lox with bagels, cream cheese, onions, arugula and capers. The noise level can be intolerable (for those of us with less than perfect hearing) at nigh,t but it is very pleasant at lunch time.

Apparently the sisters, pictured in the mural on the side of the orange building, lived upstairs and inspired the name of the restaurant....In front of the restaurant is a cement post of unknown origin and purpose, which has had an elaborate cosy crocheted for it. My picture of it can be found in my Blipfolio under "city" (for no logical reason other than the fact that I can't figure out where else to put it!) I would love it if the folio were a little easier to navigate. I can't blame anyone for not wanting to scroll through everything at a snail's pace looking for a particular picture....
