Our Library

"Books constitute capital. A library book lasts as long as a house, for hundreds of years. It is not, then, an article of mere consumption but fairly of capital, and often in the case of professional men, setting out in life, it is their only capital."
Thomas Jefferson

"I spent three days a week for 10 years educating myself in the public library, and it's better than college. People should educate themselves - you can get a complete education for no money. At the end of 10 years, I had read every book in the library and I'd written a thousand stories." Ray Bradbury

This is our local library. We are tremendously lucky to have it; friendly staff, well resourced and welcoming to children. I can't believe I'm living in a time when things I took for granted as a child of the fifties are under threat. Free NHS dental care as a child and student ensured I still have teeth. Without a school library and local library my childhood would have been so much poorer. We only had a couple of books at home; 'The Cruel Sea' being one of them. However I remember the excitement of going to our primary school library and getting 'Just William' books. I used several local libraries as a teenager and student and even now borrow from three. Getting rid of free dental care and access to libraries smarts of Thatcherism - 'Knowing the cost of everything, but the value of nothing'.
