Journey Day 12, Last Day
30 years ago we "discovered" Smuggler's Cove, just south of Cannon Beach - truly we were sure few knew of it - not so but it is still very special. Then on that trip Tom saw a grey whale heading north after a winter in Mexico's waters - and it was our honeymoon.
So today, our last day was a nostaligic one; here, then stops at Hug Point where there is a roadbed cut into the rock that juts into the sea for getting around at low tide back when that was the road way, Cannon Beach to browse a favorite bookstore, and then driving through north of Oregon Coast to cross the wide and amazing Columbia River at Astoria where Lewis and Clark finally found the Pacific, and through Washington without touching a freeway - using the ferry from Bremerton to downtown Seattle.
We drove 1303 miles and all but 50 were on small and secondary roads. We have three new geology books pertinent to Oregon's incredible landscape, a whole lot of photos to get through and deal with, and memories that for the love of Blip I actually have a small record of!
Thanks for traveling with us, for your comments and favorites - and do travel out this way if you've not - it is amazing land!
