Mittens Shadow Event
Today was a day of awe and wonder as scene after scene appeared before my eyes. I could have blipped any of the hundreds of images I took so it had to be something special to be chosen and this was. but more of that later.
The day started with a return to Arches - a walk through Park Avenue followed by a trip to Landscape Arch. As each vista unfolded it was difficult to know where to point the camera next. Could have spent the day with a macro lens in Park Av photographing the ripples and waves in the rock beneath our feet, or doing close ups of the dried trees along the trail. Instead all that was possible was to sample the delights all around and listen to the groans from the group as we realised we couldnt stay in that spot for a couple of hours but had to move forward. Landscape arch came into view with a collective "Oooh" the comments becoming less coherent as we got closer. Wonders indeed. Lunch was followed by the drive to Monument Valley accompanied by nature's percussion as thunder and lightening played all around us. Reaching the visitors centre we were told that today was a special day, as it was a day when the shadow of one Mitten fell directly on the other at sunset, an event that only happens twice a year. An appropriate way to celebrate Friday 13th as we stood and waited, remembering all those westerns we had watched set in that iconic scenery, with the lightening flashes punctuating the gathering gloom. Would the clouds relent and let the event happen. It did and here is the result.
