Killhope, the North of England Lead Mining Museum

Killhope is a fully restored nineteenth century Victorian lead mine and
stands on the site of the former Park Level Mine which opened in 1853.

Wellington's were needed for our tour of the old lead mine as we walked through water.

In 1870 the lead mine at Killhope was one of the richest and most prosperous in Britain, a hundred years later the site lay derelict, overgrown, robbed of stone, equipment and machinery, with only the massive waterwheel standing defiant as a proud monument to a vanished industry.

The overshot waterwheel was fully restored in 1991.

Killhope is the best preserved lead mining site in Britain and is at the heart of what was the largest lead mining area, the North Pennines.
