Lanercost Priory

The beautiful and  tranquil setting of Augustinian Lanercost Priory belies an often troubled history.
Standing close to Hadrian's Wall, it suffered frequent attacks during the long Anglo-Scottish wars, once by Robert Bruce in person.

Lanercost Priory was founded in  about 1166 by Henry II.
When completed in 1220, canons came from the priory in Norfolk, and remained for some 370 years until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, by Henry VIII.
