Portchester Castle

We visited here today - started with a walk around the outside of the Roman walls which surround the area in which the castle stands. They are the longest continuous Roman walls in northern Europe I believe. You can see across the water to Portsmouth - I got a lovely misty view of the Spinnaker tower, but decided to go for this photo instead which shows some of the walls and a bit of the shore. The Parish Church also stands within the walls and an Augustinian monastery used to be attached to it centuries ago (long since gone). There is a huge area of open grass inside and the castle is in the opposite corner to the church. Hubby and son went up the very high keep. I have done this a couple of times before and decided not to bother today as I wanted to save my energy! I'm not overly keen on spiral staircases either...

The weather was kind to us today and it was actually HOT at times! We called in at Dad's for tea on our way back, as we did on Tuesday as well. Won't be heading over in that direction for a few days now as the Goodwood Revival car event is on and everything gets snarled up along the A27 when that takes place!

Tomorrow we are probably going to Arundel Castle as the weather sounds okay until about 4pm., - originally tomorrow was due to be a wash-out.
