Goodbye old friend

This the Carrick/City Of Adelaide.

It's the oldest surviving Clipper ship. It's been rotting away in Irvine for as long as I can remember, but is now about to make one last voyage back to Australia very soon, to be renovated (or stripped down and used to fuel a massive bbq).

It's had a long and colourful history and I will be sad to see it go, being down the harbour tonight and seeing the big gap in the skyline where it used to sit made the place seem unfamiliar. There are lots of changes going on in the town just now, the thoroughfare to the shopping mall is being remodeled and work has begun on relocating the leisure centre, much to the annoyance and protest of many folk from the town. The council never listens though.

Anyway I though I had missed the departure of the Carrick, as it was taken from its berth on Sunday, I'm glad I got down to catch it up close for once (it's always been fenced off to the general public). Shame it was a such a grey and dull day, but it gave me a chance to do a bit of black and white post processing.

Anyway it was the late John Martyn's birthday yesterday, so here's a song by the Velvet Underground...

I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seas, on a great big clipper ship
