War Museum Overloon in The Netherlands

Today we visited Overloon and the war museum Oorlogs set in 14 hectares of parkland. This is where where the biggest tank battle in the Netherlands had taken place in 1944, the ongoing story from Market Garden, where the artillery were due to catch up with the paratroopers to capture the bridges and gain a back door into Germany and shorten the war.

This is now the location for the Dutch National War and Resistance Museum. We have learnt about the dreadful time that many Dutch citizens experienced throughout WW2 where people died from hunger, the resistance movement, the dutch ships that were transferred to Britain to help the allies and the role the Dutch government and royal family played in boosting moral of the Dutch. Market Garden didn't work out as planned and the Dutch continued to live in an occupied country until 1945.

The museum is large and very informative, eventually we found the hall containing the largest collection of military vehicles in Europe. Most are from the second WW but also THIS American amphibious vehicle - above - was used in Vitenam. When I stood beside the tyre it was as high again, it must be at least 10 feet tall. It was the size of it that was shocking or awesome I can't decide which.

I feel, as always, that a place with this amount of information would be easier to cover over a two day visit rather than one. However, at €14 each, one day is enough.
