Almost, but not quite
Today thru to Sunday it is the Annual Light Aircraft Association Rally at Sywell Airfield in Northamptonshire. Having been unable to visit it for a few years I have pushed the boat out and plan to be there for all three days at the star of what is effectively a two week break from 'the norm'.
Over the weekend over 800 aircraft are expected to fly -n from all parts of the UK and abroad, and it can be quite a sight to see so many on final approach at one time. As so often happens there was a significant crosswind component and one or two aircraft made 'interesting' landings.
This was the worst when the wind caught the starboard (right) wing of this Isaacs Fury as it was slowing down after touchdown and threatened to turn it over, and certainly caused it to weathervane into the wind. 'Almost, but not quite' is my title ... because the skill of the pilot restored it to an even keel before that happened, but the few seconds as it ran along with one wingtip on the ground must have seemed like an age.
You can see the ripple it has caused in the fabric of the port wing, but I'm not sure whether it did more serious damage.
It does go to show the power in the wind, power that is unseen yet very real.
