still waters...
...and perfect for reflections.
Lake C Y O'Connor collects rainwater and water catchment run off behind the wall of Mundaring Weir.
A beautiful still, misty morning with low cloud shrouding the trees and a lone kangaroo grazing on a patch of lush green grass.
Named for C Y O'Connor, an Irish engineer perhaps best known for designing and constructing possibly the world's longest pipeline carrying water from this very dam, 530km across country to Kalgoorlie in WA's Goldfields .
An enormous engineering feat at the best of times and even more amazing to think this all happened at the beginning of the 2oth century as a response to the need for water in the dry lands of newly discovered gold country. This at a time when the railroad was in its infancy and goods were carted by camel and bullock train.
Sadly the pressures, political machinations and accusations of corruption and money wasting all took a toll. He committed suicide shortly before the water did (despite his doubters and critics) arrive at Mount Charlotte Reservoir in Kalgoorlie in 1902.
Some 111 years later, water still travels the 'Golden Pipeline' from this lake to the Kalgoorlie Reservoir.
