Doocot, Nunraw Abbey

Doos, AKA pigeons, were an important source of fresh meat in winter. You find this style of doocot in many places in East Lothian which was where we were walking today. In the Middle Ages Nunraw was a nunnery from which it takes its name - Nuns' Row. Now it is a Cistercian monastery, but not an ancient one - it was founded by monks from Ireland in 1946. Here is a link if you want to find out more.
