Wolf Spider
While gardening today I was graced with the presence of this little critter..a Wolf Spider, which are the Cheetahs of the spider world. they are specialised to run down their insect prey on the ground and in the open.Wolf spiders come in all sizes up to 20mm in body length. Lean bodied, nimble-legged they are clad in muted tones of brown, grey, ochre and fawn.Wolf spiders are common and easily found with a flash light at night because their tiny eyes reflect like a cat's. Cats and many nocturnal creatures have a mirror-like structure(called the Tapetum ) in the back of the eye which boosts night vision by reflecting light back through the sensitive cells a second time. amazing aye?. When I first moved the soil it disturbed this guy and he immediately ran for a clod of soil and disappearded under it... so of course I moved the clod etc. etc. etc. and finally got my shot.
