6a.m. - Can't Sleep

Sent from my iPad

“Autumn seemed to arrive suddenly that year. The morning of the first September was crisp and golden as an apple...”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

“You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. "
― Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

A sharp start to September. Still no curtains in bedroom due to long saga with double glazing. I hate Autumn, the melancholic feeling that summer is over, accentuated by garden centres displaying their Christmas stock. Aargh - pet hate alert!

The reason I can't sleep is partly to do with the light, but also probably because I slept for a good bit of the way back from Edinburgh yesterday evening and also because I drank 2 cans of a certain high energy drink to which I'm in danger of becoming addicted. It reminds me of the raspberry Cremola foam of my youth.

Woke at 5a.m. and was delighted to find first blip from Ben who is on road trip in America. At what age do you stop worrying about your children? Steve's mum used to make us give her two rings on the phone when we got home from visiting her in Aberdeen. At that point Steve was about 56 yrs! However being a canny Scot she didn't want us to waste money on a call - hence the two rings! As Charlie and Jean always seemed to be watching either snooker or bowling at high volume, we were never sure if they'd hear.

Going out to lunch with people from Steve's year group at University. Was hoping to wear summer clothes - but maybe not!

LATER: Sorry, got confused. Of course it's still August. Blame Finn, who's 2 years on the 2nd but is celebrating tomorrow - hence my muddled state!
