Something Sunny
Here is my bird, Sunny, the cockatiel.
Oddly enough, he is usually anything but sunshine to strangers.
He's not fond of being man-handled or belittled; he is a small bird with a big attitude. But to me he is an absolute ham. Whenever I come close to him, whether passing by or giving him direct attention, he always puts his head down (a good sign of submissive behavior) and waits for me to scratch his neck or give him a good rub under the chin. He loves to be kissed and give them in return, and when he's perched on my shoulder, he loves to cuddle up next to my face and rub it with the smooth side of his beak. He chirps very faintly when being pet and will also close his eyes in means of falling asleep after being stroked on the head for a good minute or two.
I came home from my first on-site college class and felt a little numb. My introvert-self wasn't positive on how to handle the newness of my life. But all was well in my own world. Sunny was there to sing to me as I laid half awake in bed pondering my future. And when I finally decided to turn out the lights, Sunny cooed for a little bit before falling asleep himself. That's when the thought struck me, when he chooses to be, Sunny can be the sweetest bird. And when I try hard enough, I can be an extrovert. It just takes a little bit more out of me...
