Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

First Morning of the New Semester

The plan was to watch up early . . . I needed to get to the campus on time and the traffic is usually pretty thick the first few weeks of the semester . . . but when I slipped out of bed and looked toward the southeast, I knew that I was about to see morning's "rise and shine."

I also knew that if I looked away, I'd miss it. So there it is.

As I drove into the campus parking lot, my car acted like she was having a heart attack. I hoped that I could coast her into a parking spot and that was exactly what happened. I decided not to phone Mr. Fun and wreck his day so early with the news that my car was broken. I knew I could phone him at lunch time to give him the low-down about my car.

I didn't realize that lunch time would include spending time in the office of Chair of the English Department. The online portion of my course was not opening and I needed help. I knew my chairperson, who loves technology, could fix it and she did. Whew!

Next I read a quick email on my phone to learn that I was expected to do an orientation in the new Writing Lab at 2:00. I absolutely panicked. I am not familiar with the new Lab. So I walked quickly to that location to get the details on orientation and learned that our fearless Dean of Instruction would be doing the orientation. What a relief. Then I headed across the campus to my office to eat some lunch quickly before the 2 o'clock hour arrived.

As the lab orientation began, I was so tired. I was thrilled to find an empty chair and sit while the Dean did the orientation. During the next two hours, four orientations were presented. When I walked away from the lab at 4:00, I found Mr. Fun just outside of my office. He had already had my car towed to the shop so that the mechanic could make a diagnosis. He helped me get my things to his car and we were gone.

The evening agenda included some time at Java Joes's in Yorba Linda at Scott's Open Mic Night which was going to include a birthday celebration for my friend, Peggy, Scott's wife. That was lots of fun.

It's been a good day.
