Sweet scented tree

Does anyone know what this tree is? It smells of honeysuckle, but the flowers are wrong for that, and it has a thickish trunk, so is definitely a tree not a shrub. I have googled for photographs, but can find nothing the same as this. There were two of them on a grass verge and I was attracted to them by the wonderful scent...

I saw these after a walk by our local stream. I was going to post a photo of that, but am really hoping that someone can identify the mystery trees for me! It was a nice sunny morning, not too hot, so I decided to get out for a walk before it did heat up too much. Trying to have a less busy day today - we packed a lot into yesterday - going to the dump, Haskins Garden Centre, the farm shop and the local shop in the morning before preparing blackberry and apple crumble to take to Dad's in the afternoon. I was really exhausted by bed-time!! So no housework today (good excuse!) just cooking and typing!
