Entrance to Alnwick Castle

This morning, Roger and I set off for a few days up in Northumberland. We were in and out of showers all the way, but by the time we were walking into Alnwick Castle the sun was starting to come out, but you can still see evidence of rain in the puddles. We decided to look around the outside first and take pictures while it was dry, and sure enough by the time we left, the sky was quite dark and forbidding again.
Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England (after Windsor). Yves de Vescy, Baron of Alnwick, erected the first parts of the castle in 1096. It was built to defend England's northern border against the Scottish invasions and border reivers. Since 1309 it has been the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland. It has been used in the shooting of numerous films, including Harry Potter, Becket, Black Adder, Elizabeth and Robin Hood. It is used in the summer by St. Cloud State University , Minnesota as a branch campus forming part of their International Study Programme.

From there we went to our B&B in Seahouses.
