Around the Block

Stormy Weather

Some rain, wind and rough seas here in Rio today curtailed our activities to a walk along the front before a late lunch at our local Italian.

Perhaps the turbulent weather was a sign of the historic day tomorrow when for the first time ever a former President of Brazil (Bolsonaro) goes on trial for his alleged involvement in the frustrated coup to overthrow the government on 8th January 2023 (we were here that day). The Economist recently praised Brazil for being staunch in its holding to account of those inclined to overturn democracy, in comparison with other, more mature, democracies.

The feeling is that the evidence against him, other ministers and the head of one branch of the armed forces is pretty damning and that decades-long sentences are likely to be handed down in two weeks time.
