Watch House
This small well constructed building in St Peter's Kirkyard, Duffus is, as a roundel above the door states, a Watch House and was built in 1830.
Watch houses were built to shelter watchers who guarded the graves of freshly buried corpses to prevent them being robbed by body snatchers or Resurrectionists. They removed the corpse, usually under cover of darkness so that it could be sold to a medical school for dissection. This gruesome trade provided the only legal source of bodies for dissection prior to the 1832 Anatomy Act.
It is surprising to find evidence of body snatching so far from a medical school- Aberdeen is over 70 miles away.
The entrance to Gordonstoun School is only yards away from the kirkyard - but surely not!
