On This Day

Portsoy

The plan today had been to walk to Portsoy. However walking on a north facing cliff with a lively southerly wind blowing didn't feel too enticing. Instead we took the car, plugged it in and spent a couple of hours enjoying the sights. Here's part of the 17th century harbour with the warehouses and other interesting buildings behind.

Last night there had been a Viking torchlight procession in Portsoy with visiting Jarls from Shetland. It was a shame that it was a wet evening after such a dry summer. We chatted to one of the festival organisers and he was delighted with how it had all gone. He was clearing up some charred wood - all that remained of the festivities.

Today's weather has been wonderful again so after Portsoy we went to the beach at Sandend (Sanein) where there were people swimming, gannets diving and arctic terns screeching. Lastly we went to Cullen and had a good walk over the railway viaduct and along the beach. Cullen is out of Aberdeenshire and into Moray.

Now back at base and we will be having a quiet evening after our two meals out. Last night's was excellent with local scallops but we were the only customers. I felt so sorry for the chef because the food was top notch even if the venue was a wee bit lacking in atmosphere!

Thank you for all your kind birthday wishes. This has been a lovely place to spend a celebratory weekend.
