Brick

Following on from my post last week about the Leicestershire coalfield, I was surprised to see this brick in the Flower Lady courtyard. It was on the steps that led up to a garden, sadly overgrown but in process of being cleared. I'd never spotted the steps before. Apparently there was a brick works at the colliery using the fire clay exposed in the pits.

Whitwick Colliery was a major pit in our region before closing in 1986, the first deep mining pit in Leicestershire. The first coal had been mined in 1828. In 1947, 1100 men had been employed there and it was the most efficient and productive pit in the coalfield. But time moves on.

Ironically, we bought our present house in Shepshed from the then manager of the colliery. He moved back to Yorkshire where the prospects seemed better.

Market this morning, and Currys in the afternoon where we swapped our old soundbar for a new one. We lost sound on the telly last night.
