On This Day

The Red Well

The Red Well is believed to date from Roman times. It is a Chalybeate Spring and the water was said to have healing properties. Though there's a sign to say that it's not fit for human consumption. You can see that the red iron water has stained the stones outside the beehive shaped well cover.

We are staying in the Aberdeenshire village of Whitehills. It's on the north Aberdeenshire coast about 2.5 miles west of Banff. The Red Well is just outside the village on the way to Banff. I've put my Strava map as an extra so that you can see the walk we had. It was really attractive with a good variety - beach, town, river, woodland. When we reached Macduff a bus was due so we hopped aboard and returned to the holiday cottage.

Today is our wedding anniversary. The owners of the cottage left us a £20 voucher for the pub across the road and a bottle of organic fizz in the fridge. How kind. We are going to eat at the pub tonight for a celebratory meal.

Things I've noticed today:
More butterflies than over the whole summer
Ground so dry that the grass is completely brown and the trees are shedding leaves even faster than at home
It's so clean - well done Aberdeenshire Council and the people of the shire
