Great Gable
Sunny day forecast so we headed early over to the Lake District to tackle Great Gable. Now I live in the Yorkshire Dales which are gorgeous, but the Lake District is something else. It's the equivalent of going to New York for the first time and seeing the skyscrapers and thinking wow, those are tall buildings! The mountains are just beautiful and you pass the equally good looking Howgills on the way too, a motorway journey of distinction.
The forecasters were right, sun all the way tho' hazy. We went from Honister slate quarry along Moses' Trod and this blip is us almost near the top of Great Gable. Infact, round about the moment when I remembered that I'm not that good at heights really...
On the way down we met a retired couple from Washington State who were doing a bit of the Coast to Coast Walk. After 14 miles they were looking pretty done in, so we offered them a lift to their b&b for the evening saving them a long trudge along the tarmac road. Always nice to do a favour for fellow walkers.
We stopped at Tebay service station - voted the best service station in Britian - and you can see why. This is no ordinary pitstop. It is run by a cooperative of local farmers and so you can pick up locally raised meat, vegetables and lots of delicious pies and puds. A real treat.
