I have always enjoyed dolls. As a child I was Playmobil’s number one fan, collecting every last set and piece I could. I would spend hours playing with it, never once getting bored, and I would say that the only reason I don’t now is because I’m too old to be playing with dolls now.
However, there are some dolls aimed at adults, collector’s items and antiques for example, that are considered OK to be getting excited about buying in your twenties. Take BJDs (ball-jointed dolls) for example. I have a secret desire to own one, dress it up and post photos of it on the internet to my fellow doll-loving wannabes, and that desire has increased since seeing that a girl at my university did what I thought was impossible and MADE ONE from scratch. Since then I have been longing to do he same, so that I may too own one at a fraction of the cost of buying one online.
Here, I may say, is the answer. I only found out about these Makie dolls recently when I visited the Design Museum in London. They are the first toy to be made by using a 3D printer, which I think is incredible just on it’s own, but on top of that it gives the consumer the power to design the look of their own doll. When you get to the website you are faced with a program similar to ‘The Sims’ in which every part of the face is customisable. With all that you also get a set of clothes for your unique creation, all for £99! I’m next in line..
