Grumpy Old Man

By Maurice1948

It's all in the game!

Today was to be the Oban Games, part of what's known as the Argyllshire Gathering and which has been held almost every year since 1871. The forecast was pretty bad, showers all day, so I decided not to bother! However, by 1pm it was still dry, though rather dull, so I changed my mind and MrsM drove me down, as parking isn't easy on the day.

Unfortunately entries were seriously down this year for some reason and many of the events, such as tossing the caber and long jumping, were restricted to the morning and not repeated during the afternoon as per the programme. So apart from a few entrants throwing the 'Weight over the Bar' - my extra today - the biggest attraction was the Tug-of-War, which went on for some time! My Blip today is of one of the lady competitors - the picture I took after this one showed her looking somewhat less decent!

The Games was originally supposed to bring together the clans of Oban. The difference between the spectators is quite marked - the majority are ordinary folk, but among them are the upper echelons of local society, lads and lassies as well as older folk dressed in a somewhat superior manner with waxed jackets and green wellies. The lady in my picture belongs to that group, I feel!
