..endeavour to persevere

Knee deep with the dragons

A quick trip out to my local nature reserve and 3 interlinking ponds much reduced by the recent hot weather.
My plan believe it or not was to try to get a macro shot of a pond skater, particularly their hairy feet which enable them to utilise the surface tension of the water..  (there was a time when my plan was a run in the hills and a pub)
I was distracted (as usual) by something else, in this case a flock of Goldfinches readying for migration I guess.
The Goldfinches were having none of my photography efforts so I returned to the mission - Operation Pond Skater.
I spotted a likely subject, setup a mini tripod and kneeled in the margins trying to get focus with my fully manual macro lens. This proved difficult to say the least, not just the focus but the effort in holding my position and not going head first in the mud.
I was saved from disaster by the dragons - kneeling in the margin mud my low profile seemed to reassure them and they rose up all around me.
I spent about 30mins watching them,  one common darter kept landing on a stone beside me and cocking his head up at an angle as if to look me up and down.  It began to rain and I felt my T-Shirt getting wet but no matter I was kneeling in a pond so in scheme of things it wasn't a big deal. I remained there as long as I dared, before my back and legs completely seized up.
On review of my shots and using a combination of Seek and Internet searches I was pleased to bag a number of different species, I also noted while searching that there are a number of alternative names.
Common "x" or common "y" doesn't seem to do them justice somehow.
Main blip is a Sedge Darner,  extras a Black Meadowhawk and Highland Darters
